BE AWARE: COVID-19 Scams are Afoot

Cybercriminals are creating malicious campaigns designed around COVID-19. In these elaborate schemes, criminals are taking advantage of panic and the demand for up-to-date information related to the Coronavirus in order to gain access to your sensitive data. They are doing this by sending malicious links in phishing emails. In response to this threat, we created an email template to help you inform your staff on these new phishing campaigns.

Email Template to Employees:

Subject line: COVID-19 Related Scams [IMPORTANT!]

Greetings,

Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the current COVID-19 situation to access your computer using malware.  Recent efforts include emails impersonating familiar health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).   Given our current situation of remote work, it is more important than ever to remain vigilant when reading, sending and opening attachments via email.

Here’s what you need to know:

Cybercriminals are sending emails from the World Health Organization’s legitimate email domain. This is known as domain spoofing, a common tool in the arsenal of scammers.

The WHO and the CDC will never ask for donations via email. Some scams involve a request for donations to help combat COVID-19.

You need to be cautious when clicking on any links that come from outside of your organization. In this specific case, the “information” these criminals claim to be providing you, will usually be accessible from the legitimate organization's official website.

Remember: When in doubt, do not click on anything in an email and immediately bring it to the attention of your supervisor or Infotect.

 Best,
