Working from Home: 5 Simple Tips for Peace of Mind

Working from home during a pandemic can be frustrating and uneasy. You don’t know if your Wi-Fi is secure or if your personal computer has the correct anti-virus. It’s okay to be stressed out during this unpredictable time, but you don’t have to be.

Infotect has already published on safety and security during the COVID-19 pandemic.  We have also added videos to our YouTube channel.  Making sure you are secure is a great way to make day to day home-office life less stressful.  Below are 5 simple recommendations:

Set Up Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication

99.9% of hacked Microsoft accounts don’t use 2-Factor Authentication. Don’t be a part of that statistic and check out Infotect’s new YouTube tutorial detailing five quick steps to set up Microsoft 2-Factor Authentication. Just five minutes of your time could save you a lot of trouble!

Don’t Leave Devices Unattended

Lock your screen and if you will be away for more than a few minutes place your devices out of sight. Especially while working at home, children and pets can pose a serious risk to your device security. Ideally, place devices in a locked drawer so no one, even on accident, can get to them.

Keep Device Software Up to Date

Companies are constantly releasing patches and updates to keep your devices more secure. In recent news, Microsoft released an emergency update to patch a vulnerability problem that even affected the United States government. By keeping your device up to date, you prevent malware and other malicious content from entering your secure business network.

Have Dedicated Admin Accounts

Restricting access to only certain members in your network is a key piece of protecting your business. Designated admin accounts prevent you from accessing files you don’t need or downloading programs that could harm your computer. This tip may require your business’ administration to set up and designate one or two trusted employees to allow access to network users when necessary.

Educate Yourself on Phishing Attacks

One of the easiest ways to protect yourself and your network from malware is by teaching yourself to recognize suspicious emails and programs. In the work at home environment, online communication via email is more frequent – meaning attackers are more likely to target you using this method. By identifying phishing attempts, avoiding suspicious downloads or links, and adding Advanced Treat Protection (ATP) to your email, you can prevent malware from jeopardizing your device security.
