Returning to school during the 2020-2021 year is different than most years. This year it’s not a choice of which sport your kid is playing, or how many after school activities you must juggle but how are my kids attending school? Will they still receive the same good education from home? The Florida Department of Education has been working with the Florida Department of Health and released a few options for Public school.

You can choose to have your kids go to brick and mortar school, eLearning, or Flex learning which is a combination of brick and mortar and eLearning. With safety for the students and faculty being priority #1 these options will help make you and your child feel more comfortable during this new and confusing time.

Specifically, eLearning and Flex learning give you the opportunity to get an education from home with total piece of mind. Preventing your child from coming into contact, even safely, with hundreds of their peers each day. If you choose this option for your child here are some tips to succeed in this environment.

Technology Essentials

  • Computer or laptop with enough processor to reliably perform, download software, take tests, video conference.

  • Stable and secure internet connection

  • Dedicated login for kids or parental controls set so students stay on track

Homework Space

  • Dedicated area to work on schoolwork without distractions

  • Set a schedule for your students to work on subjects, just like if they were in school

Cyber Security

  • Basic anti-virus installed onto all your PCs

  • Teach your kids about the importance of not clicking on malicious links or opening random emails

  • More screen time means more opportunity for attackers

  • Keep the important things at home, just like with work data – school data should not be accessed while on public WIFI

If you choose this route for your student, be aware that none of these options are perfect but hopefully these tips will help set your student up for success!
