Disinfecting Technology during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Cleaning frequently contacted surfaces is a common chore. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, cleaning surfaces is more essential than ever. Considering increased reliance and contact with technology, disinfecting devices is one of the most important opportunities to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the COVID-19 virus β€œcan survive anywhere between three hours and seven days, depending on the material.” Specifically, the virus can survive up to 5 days on glass and 3 days on plastic and steel- all three of which are materials commonly used in technology. Technology should be cleaned after each use or after being used by another individual. Frequently washing hands is another good preventative measure to limit spreading germs onto your technology. As companies resume normal workplace hours, it is important to disinfect devices along with other safety protocols such as social distancing and using personal protective equipment (PPE).

The following information is applicable when cleaning all technology:

  1. Always turn off devices before cleaning. This includes unplugging from external power sources.

  2. Always gently handle devices when cleaning. Rubbing too hard could cause permanent damage.

  3. Never use harsh fabrics or paper towels to clean technology. Instead, utilize lint-free, soft cloths such as microfiber.

  4. Never use harsh chemicals or detergents when cleaning technology. Instead, use a cloth dampened with a 70% or less Isopropyl alcohol solution. Solutions with small amounts of soft soap are also effective.

  5. Never use a cloth that is too wet on your devices. Cloths should only be dampened. Always dry devices after wiping with a damp cloth.

  6. Never submerge technology in liquid or put devices under a running faucet. Also avoid sprays as this could cause cleaning solutions to get into devices.

These tips are specific to different types of technology:

Smartphones and Tablets

Ensure every part of the device is cleaned when disinfecting by taking off protective cases or screen protectors. Disinfect each surface separately before reassembling. Avoid getting liquid into crevices.

Keyboards

After unplugging the keyboard from your computer, turn it over to remove debris. Then use a cloth to wipe along the keys gently. Cotton swabs can be useful when cleaning hard to reach places.

Headsets/Earbuds

Clean microphone and speaker mesh with a dry cotton swab. Avoid getting liquid into device.

These are common devices that should be disinfected in the workplace or at home:

  • Smartphones

  • Laptops

  • Tablets

  • Headsets/Earbuds

  • Mice

  • Keyboards

  • Monitors

  • Printers

  • Scanners

  • Fax Machines

  • Landline Phones

Even while working remotely, it is critical to maintain a clean work environment. As interaction with technology happens daily, keeping devices clean is essential to limit the spread of COVID-19.
